But where are the translators of yesteryear?
In the presence of a translator, who was not wanted by Zelensky, the Oval Office debacle could have been avoided.
This translator would, of course, have allowed the Ukrainian president to be more precise in his communication. But, more importantly, they would have helped to defuse and calm tensions through their choice of words, their calm tone, and their way of conveying Zelensky’s terms. A third party would thus have usefully diluted the ambient aggressiveness and constituted a sort of barrier that would, evidently, have prevented those heated verbal exchanges between the interlocutors. The parties present could have taken the time to react less impulsively, and Zelensky could also have, subsequently, nuanced his remarks by invoking an inappropriate translation.
It is significant to note that the future of Ukraine, as well as that of Zelensky himself, whose life is now at risk, could have taken a completely different turn in the presence of those translators who deliberately strive to remain transparent and absolutely discreet, with the specific purpose of allowing Heads of State the time to control their emotions.
